Brutally, he was beaten to a pulp, and even cried to Goku about his past. That was some emotional shiz.

Spoiler: click to toggle The Flashbacks of Kaede's childhood (Elfen Lied) - The trauma and abuse that she went through in her childhood makes you find a lot of pity for her, especially when she lost almost everything she valued. The Going Merry's Viking Funeral (One Piece) - You know a scene's emotional when you cry at a ship being burned. Ace's Death (One Piece) - Ace bringing forth his last words, giving his last thanks, while Luffy sits traumatized. What more is there to say about it? The climax of the battle between Toki and Raoh (Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star) - Manly tears are shed from one of the most cold hearted characters in the manga/anime at pity for his brother's sad fate . Specifically skip to when Gintoki is listening to the story on the radio(there aren't really any spoilers for the series its just a random ep) It takes a lot but the story and music almost had me in tears Which is surprising from a comedy like Gintama lol.

Yea that whole process from the introduction of his character to the end of canon Naruto (in the anime) was just truly great. He only had the spotlight on him every now and then but when it was there it always seemed to shine brightest.
